A dead calculator the morning of an exam is one of the most preventable disasters in a student's life. This guide covers exactly how battery power works on both the original TI-84 Plus and the rechargeable TI-84 Plus CE, plus simple habits that keep your calculator working reliably for years.

The two main TI-84 models handle power very differently — the original TI-84 Plus uses four replaceable AAA batteries plus a backup lithium cell, while the TI-84 Plus CE uses a built-in rechargeable battery charged over USB. Knowing which one you have determines exactly how to keep it powered.

This guide walks through replacing AAA batteries, charging the CE properly, tips for extending battery life on both models, general physical care, and how to back up your programs and data before a battery-related reset.

Replacing AAA Batteries

On the TI-84 Plus, slide open the back cover to reveal four AAA battery slots and one small round lithium backup battery (usually a CR1616 or CR1620). Replace all four AAA batteries at the same time with fresh batteries of the same type — never mix old and new batteries, which can cause uneven power draw.

The backup lithium battery only needs replacing every few years and exists specifically to preserve programs and memory while you swap the AAAs. As long as you don't remove the backup battery at the same time as the AAAs, your programs, apps, and settings will remain intact through the swap.

Charging the TI-84 Plus CE

The TI-84 Plus CE charges through a Micro-USB or USB-C port (depending on the exact model year) using the included cable, plugged into any USB power source such as a computer or wall adapter. A full charge from empty typically takes around 4 hours.

A small battery icon in the top corner of the home screen shows the current charge level, and the calculator can be used while charging. Unlike phone batteries, lithium-polymer batteries in calculators generally do not develop the same cell degradation from frequent charging, so there's no need to fully drain it before recharging.

Extending Battery Life

On both models, lowering screen contrast (2ND, then the up/down arrows) and turning the calculator off between classes rather than leaving it idle can meaningfully extend how long a charge or set of batteries lasts. The calculator does auto power-off after a few minutes of inactivity, but manually turning it off saves even more.

Running graphing-intensive programs or displaying images for extended periods draws more power than basic arithmetic, so if you're on a CE getting low, sticking to simple calculations until you can recharge will stretch the remaining battery further.

Cleaning and Physical Care

Clean the screen and keys with a soft, dry microfiber cloth — avoid liquid cleaners near the battery compartment or ports, and never submerge the calculator. A slip cover (included with most models) prevents scratches on the screen when the calculator is loose in a backpack.

Avoid extreme heat, such as leaving the calculator in a hot car, which can damage both the screen and the internal battery over time. If keys become sticky or unresponsive, a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the key (not underneath) usually resolves it.

Backing Up Your Data Before Battery Issues

If your AAA batteries die completely along with the backup lithium battery, or the CE's battery fully drains for an extended period, you risk losing stored programs and custom settings. Connect your calculator to a computer running TI Connect CE software and back up your files to your computer periodically, especially before a long break when the calculator might sit unused.

If you share programs with classmates or wrote something you don't want to lose, this backup step takes only a couple of minutes and completely eliminates the risk of losing work to an unexpected battery failure.
